James W. Simpkins, PhD

Scientific Advisor, Kronos Longevity Research Institute

James W. Simpkins currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience and Director of the Institute for Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Prior to his positions at the University of North Texas, he was a faculty member of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and rose through the ranks to the position of Professor of Pharmacodynamics. He also served as Chairman of the Department of Pharmacodynamics, Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, Frank Duckworth Professor of Drug Discovery, and as Director of the Center for the Neurobiology of Aging at the University of Florida.

He is currently serving as Principal Investigator of two ongoing program project grants, a training grant and several R01 grants that focus on drug discovery for aging and Alzheimer’s disease. His research has focused on the discovery of novel compounds for the treatment of age-related brain disorders, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. His current research focuses on the signaling pathways that mediate the neuroprotective and anti-Alzheimer’s neuropathological actions of estrogens.

Dr. Simpkins has authored more than 270 peer-reviewed publications, secured 21 patents for his discoveries and edited three texts on Alzheimer's disease therapy. He also served as the director of the University of Florida Drug Discovery Group for Alzheimer's disease, which has sustained funding by the National Institute on Aging to support research in pharmacotherapy for Alzheimer's disease. In 1999, he was appointed to the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the National Alzheimer's Association.

He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in biology from the University of Toledo and received a doctorate in psychology in physiology from Michigan State University.
