Judith Wood Hallfrisch, PhD

Judith W. Hallfrisch received a BA in history and French literature from Indiana University (1965) and MS (1978) and PhD (1982) degrees in nutritional biochemistry with a minor in biostatistics from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. She served as a postdoctoral fellow and collaborating scientist under Reubin Andres at the National Institute on Aging's Gerontology Research Center in Baltimore, Maryland until 1991.

From 1991-1997 she was Research Leader of the Carbohydrate and Metabolism and Nutrient Interactions Laboratories of the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center of the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. In 1997 she was awarded a fellowship to compare diet and health factors in Native American populations and the Baltimore Longitudinal Study, collaborating with colleagues at Utah State University and the National Institute on Aging. She has acted as an expert consultant evaluating health claims for nutritional supplements for the last three years.

Dr. Hallfrisch has published 56 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 22 invited book chapters, reviews, and commentaries. She has been invited to present scientific papers at over 50 national and international scientific meetings. She has served on national and international committees involved in developing national and international nutrition policies. She has organized and chaired sessions at Experimental Biology meetings. Dr. Hallfrisch has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Nutrition for the Elderly and Journal of Nutrition and has chaired counsels or divisions of the American College of Nutrition, the American Association of Cereal Chemists, and the Gerontological Society of America. Research interest areas include: nutrition and aging, beneficial effects of grains and their components, interactions among environmental contaminants and nutritional status, and use of herbal remedies among Native Americans.
