J. Jorge Klor de Alva, JD

Board Member, Kronos Longevity Research Institute

Dr. J. Jorge Klor de Alva is Senior Vice President of International Development at Apollo Group, Inc. He is the former Chairman, President and CEO of Apollo International, Inc. Apollo International was founded by Dr. Klor de Alva when he was President of the University of Phoenix. He also served as Vice President of Business Development at Apollo Group and was a member of the boards of directors of Apollo Group and the University of Phoenix from 1991 to 2003. Prior to joining the Apollo Group, Dr. Klor de Alva held the Class of 1940 Endowed Chair at the University of California, Berkeley and before that was Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. Dr. Klor de Alva, a long-time consultant in the field of education, has worked with Dr. John Sperling, the founder of Apollo and the University of Phoenix since 1971, when the structure that led to the University of Phoenix was first being created at San Jose State University, where Dr. Klor de Alva began his academic career.

Dr. Klor de Alva has nearly 35 years of experience working in higher education, teacher preparation, and consulting for school districts, teachers' groups, the Educational Testing Service, the GRE, and the College Board. For years, he served on the Advisory Council of the Smithsonian Institute. He was also appointed to the Blue Ribbon Panel responsible for updating the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History. He also served as a board member of the American Association of Higher Education and on the Advisory Council on Education and Human Resources of the National Science Foundation.

He has published more than 75 scholarly articles, is co-author of nine social studies textbooks, and has authored, co-authored or edited another 15 books on related subjects. His most recent books, The Americans (Third edition 2005) and The Americans: Reconstruction Through the 20th Century (Third Edition 2005) are modern surveys of U.S. social and economic history.

Dr. Klor de Alva earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and a J.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in history/anthropology from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He was named a Fulbright Scholar, John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, Harry Frank Guggenheim grantee, and Getty Scholar at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities. During his career, he received numerous research grants from various agencies including the Spanish and Mexican governments, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation and other funding agencies.
