Reubin Andres, MD*Board Member, Kronos Longevity Research InstituteReubin Andres, MD, is a National Institutes of Health Scientist Emeritus. Prior to this designation, Dr. Andres served as Chief of the Metabolism Section at the National Institute on Aging's (NIA) Laboratory of Clinical Investigation and was named the first clinical director of the NIA. As clinical director, Dr. Andres was responsible for clinical research conducted at the Gerontology Research Center and for all NIA intramural studies dealing with human subjects. He also served as a professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Andres is a member of numerous professional and medical societies, including the American Diabetes Association; American Federation for Aging Research; American Federation for Clinical Research; American Geriatrics Society, Fellow; American Physiological Society; American Society for Clinical Investigation; Association of American Physicians; Endocrine Society; and the Gerontological Society of America, Fellow. He has also served on several task forces and research committees and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Gerontology. Dr. Andres received the Albert Renold Award from the American Diabetes Association for blazing the trail for other diabetes researchers with his invention of the glucose insulin clamp, which revolutionized knowledge of tissue sensitivity to insulin. The elegant technique, for which he won the 1993 Rank Prize for Nutrition at the Royal Society in London, solved the decades-long problem of quantifying insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion in human beings. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Geriatric Endocrinology from Serono Symposia; the Clinical Research Award from the American Aging Association and the American College of Clinical Gerontology; and the Enrico Greppi Gerontology Prize from the Societa Italiana di Gerontologia e Geriatria; among many other awards. Dr. Andres received his M.D. from Southwestern Medical College in Dallas and interned at the Gallinger Municipal Hospital in Washington DC. *Note: Individual is participating in a personal capacity and does not represent the NIH, NIA or federal government. |
